Late on Saturday and into early Sunday (PT), many Android users experienced widespread crashes of the Google app, which displayed a “Google keeps stopping” error. Google confirmed that the issue was resolved by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday.
The issue primarily impacted users trying to search through the app, causing it to crash immediately upon opening. Older versions of the app were also affected, and uninstalling updates via the App Info option didn’t resolve the problem. According to 9to5Google, this led to further complications.
When users attempted to open the Google app from their home screens, it crashed instantly. The Google Search bar widget also malfunctioned, briefly showing previous search queries before crashing. The Pixel Launcher search bar displayed results momentarily but then shut down, and Google Discover wouldn’t launch. Additionally, the Voice Search microphone triggered app failures, with each attempt leading to the persistent “Google keeps stopping” error.
Both stable and beta versions of the Google Search app were affected, impacting devices running Android 15, 14, and earlier, including models like the Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy. However, other Google services like Gemini, Google Assistant, Google Lens, and Circle to Search continued to work normally. Users could still access google.com via Chrome for Android, and non-Android platforms remained unaffected.
By around 11:00 PM PT on Saturday, some users reported that the app had started working again. Google acknowledged the “service disruption” at 11:07 PM PT and advised users to clear the app cache and data as a temporary workaround. The company confirmed the issue was fully resolved by 1:11 AM PT on Sunday.
“The issue with serving has been mitigated and our systems are stabilizing, but we’re still working on a fix. Affected users can try clearing the app cache and data through the Settings app. We’ll provide the next update in 12 hours.” Later, Google confirmed, “The issue has been resolved, and no further updates will be provided.”
